Liriodendron tulipifera L.
This is one of the oldest tree species. Fossil records show that a very close relative to this tree existed millions of years ago. It is sometimes called the "tulip poplar" or the "tulip tree" because of the tulip-like flowers. It has also been called "canoewood" for its obvious contribution to the dugout canoe era. The tree is most easily recognized by its unusual shaped leaves and beautiful flowers.
