Winged Elm

Ulmus alata Michx.

Family Ulmaceae

This tree is most often seen with a short trunk and open rounded crown. Height: 40-80 (12-24m). Leaves are in 2 rows, 3-6 cm long, often with slightly curved and unequal sides. The branches have "corky" outcroppings in the shape of "wings" giving the characteristic look and name. This tree is also called the "wahoo" by many. Because of its poor lumber qualities, it is not a sought-after tree. However, it is often planted as a street urban landscape tree.
