Tree of Heaven
Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle
A fast- growing, small to large tree with very large leaves having 11-41 leaflets. Leaflets not toothed except for pair of gland-tipped teeth near bases. Twigs are hairless and colored yellow-brown. The tree is planted as an ornamental until the realization of the foul odor produced by the tree becomes apparent. The tree is native to central China and Taiwan. It was brought to the United States in 1784. Because of the odor, it is considered a noxious weed in many countries.
