Platanus occidentalis L.
This is usually a very large lowland tree with distinctive mottled brown bark that flakes off in puzzle-like pieces, exposing yellowish and whitish underbark. Leaves are nearly hairless with three-or five-lobes and edged with large teeth. It produces a common "buttonball" flower/fruit structure. This tree is a great survivor; drought, traffic, pollution, urban environments, and even excess rainfall will not deter it. For those reasons, it is often planted as an urban addition to the landscape.
