Sweetgum

Liquidambar styraciflua L.

Family Hamamelidaceae

The sweetgum tree is common throughout the south. It is generally a large tree that is of significant commercial value. It has also been planted as a shade tree but is not well-liked due to its numerous spiny fruits. It is named "sweetgum" due to the gummy resin it produces. This exudate (liquid sap) has been used as a substitute (a poor one) for chewing gum. However, the resin has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
