Betula nigra L.
Also called the "red birch", the River Birch is the most common birch in the southern United States. The trunk of this tree usually divides close to the ground. It is normally found on the banks of rivers and streams or near other wetlands. The wood is known to be light but fairly strong. The tree is often planted for ornamental purposes and is an excellent tool for erosion control.
