Juniperus virginiana L.
Sometimes used as a sedative, the incense was used by Native Americans (Cheyenne and Menomini) in rituals and burned in sweat lodges and in purification rites. Leaves, berries and roots and combinations of were used to treat arthritis and rheumatism, coughing, colds, fevers, tonsillitis and pneumonia. Teas, ointments and liniments were also made from this tree. The wood made lance shafts and bows. The boughs of the tree were used for bedding, the trunk for canoes.
