White Oak

Quercus alba L.

Family Fagaceae

The White Oak Tree is found in plentiful supply in the county and throughout the state. It is an important commercial wood known for its heavy and hard qualities. It is used for flooring, furniture, ship-building, staves for oak barrels (called the "stave oak" by many). The bark was used in the past by tanneries because of the high concentration of "tannic acid". The acorns of this tree are highly prized by most animals as they are larger and sweeter than those of most other oaks. It is reported that Native Americans ground the White Oak acorns and made a flour used in bread making.
