Quercus nigra L.
The water oak is also called the "possum oak". One characteristic of this tree is the spatulate-shaped leaves. It is a popular shade tree that is now planted in urban forestry projects. The tree provides numerous small fruits (acorns) – a valuable food source for turkeys and squirrels. The tree is also a valuable lumber source providing much of the oak building materials used today.
