Gleditsia triacanthos L.
The Honeylocust tree is the bane of the southern landowner because of the persistent thorns present on young saplings. It can ruin a tractor tire and become embedded in horses’ feet. However, the tree offers a sweet reward, in the form of honey-tasting pods, to birds and wild animals. The tree is easily recognized by the compound leaves, the legume-type fruit, and the "clumps" of thorns on the tree trunk.
