It is the first tree mentioned in the Bible. The edible fig is a deciduous small tree and is one of the first plants that was cultivated by humans. Fossil evidence dating to about 9400-9200 BC were found in the Jordan Valley of Israel. The find predates the domestication of wheat, barley, and legumes, and may, therefore, be the first known instance of agriculture. It is proposed that they may have been planted and cultivated intentionally at least 1,000 years before the next group of crops of grains were domesticated. Plato called the fig the fruit for athletes
