Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh.
The Eastern Cottonwood is a distinct tree because of the large flakes of bark that peel away from the trunk in mature trees. It is also called a "poplar tree". Its wood is light and soft. It is also used for boxes, crates, pails, and pulp. The tree is found near water sources and is characterized by the flattened petiole (leaf stalk). This flattened petiole allows the leaf to "catch" the wind and causes the tree to make a "rattling" noise.
