Bradford Pear

Pyrus calleryana ‘Bradford’ Dcne.

Family Rosaceae

The Bradford Pear is a common sight throughout the county and state. It has gained its popularity as an ornamental shade tree that provides a beautiful display of white flowers in the spring. The fall leaves are usually showy as well. A drawback is the numerous small bitter fruits that seem to spread easily. Older trees (15+ years) also have the tendency to "split" as the trunk becomes heavier – causing the demise of the tree.
