Black Willow

Salix nigra Marsh.

Family Salicaceae

The Black Willow is a common sight throughout the eastern United States. In the south, it can be found bordering ponds, creeks and wetlands. It is of limited commercial value as the wood is soft and weak. However, the bark contains "salicin" which is used as a pain-relieving drug.
