Black Walnut

Juglans nigra L.

Family Juglandaceae

The Black Walnut provides a beautiful brownish-colored wood that is highly prized. It is used as a veneer for furniture and for exquisite gunstocks. Because of the value, most of the large trees have been harvested. Smaller trees do not produce as many of the fruits which are used in candies and as flavorings. The Black Walnut tree is also known to secrete hormones that retard the growth of other trees keeping the competition under control.
