Taxodium distichum (L.) L.C. Rich.

Family Taxodiaceae

This is a large swamp-loving tree that is one of the most picturesque trees of the southern swamps and bottom-lands. The bald-cypress provides wood that is very durable and decay resistant (over 1200 years is reported). The tree once grew in the northern United States but is confined to more southern regions today. It is easily recognized by its "butressed" trunk and the common "knees" that emerge from its roots.
