Carpinus caroliniana Walt.
This tree is sometimes referred to as the "musclewood" because of the fluted "ripples" commonly found in the trunk. It is also called "ironwood" because of the extremely had and tough texture of the wood. The wood has been used as mallets, golf club heads, and tool handles. The species is shade-tolerant and is often found along streams and moist bottomlands.
