Callicarpa Americana L.
The Beautyberry is native to our area and contains the chemicals callicarpenal, intermedeol and spathulenol that act as a natural repellent for mosquitoes and ticks. Native Americans used the leaves and branches for medicinal purposes. They would use the extract from boiling the roots, leaves and branches (decoction) to treat a variety of ailments. The fruit of the Beautyberry is a brilliant purple.
